At Spateston Early Learning and Childcare Centre, our Farmers Market brought together our Froebelian approach to learning through connection, community, nature and meaningful real life experiences. The children were active participants throughout the process, from planting and nurturing seeds and caring for our garden, to harvesting, cooking, creating and preparing produce to share with others.
The market provided an authentic opportunity for children to lead their learning and see the value of their contributions. Through planning, making decisions, solving problems and working together, children developed confidence, independence and a strong sense of responsibility. Their ideas were listened to and valued, reflecting our belief that children are capable, curious and active participants in their own learning.
The involvement of families, veterans and the wider community strengthened these connections, creating a shared experience that extended learning beyond the nursery. In true Froebelian spirit, the Farmers Market celebrated the importance of relationships, belonging and learning through real experiences, while helping children understand where food comes from, how we care for our environment and how, by working together, everyone has something meaningful to contribute.
Our Farmer’s Market was therefore much more than an event; it was a celebration of the children’s learning, voice, creativity and connection to their community, reflecting the unique approach to learning at Spateston Early Learning and Childcare Centre.
